Evolutionary Faith - Talkback

Here are some of the comments/questions from today's sermon, "Evolutionary Faith".

1. One attender said commented that the ethics of the 14th century don't all work today. Our ethics have changed across the ages. But the changing of ethics is also a scary thing. Is it for the good or not? The pastor responded that hopefully it is into the change that scares us. Hopefully it is the weight of the ethics to be changed.

2. Another attender said that she has always believed in evolution. God has his own time when it says that he created in six days. She also went on to say that she always worked through science. Why would God give us brains if He didn't want us to figure stuff out. The pastor mentioned that one place in the Bible it says that a single day is like a 1000 to God.

3. One person commented that he read in the paper that some minister says the world will end on May 22nd. If a day for God is like a thousand how can he say the world will end based upon something from 7000 years ago? The pastor responded that the Bible says that no one will know the time when the world will end.

4. One parishioner shared that an older teacher that she worked with refused to teach evolution because it wasn't in the Bible. When asked to explain why there were dinosaur bones, she said God put them there to trick us. The parishioner said she noticed that younger teachers started tuning her out. Why would they want to relate to a God who tricked them?

5. A final congregant mentioned that she used to attend a church where the pastor didn't allow for evolution in the Christian faith. She thinks that God has better things to do than to mess with our minds by putting dinosaur bones there for no good reason. But, then were there dinosaurs on the ark? She couldn't imagine a T-rex on the ark. She appreciates a place where she can think and grow.

Psychology, Chaos Theory, and our Faith - Talkback

Here are several questions/observations from congregants from this week's service:

1. I wonder if there is a connection between the God gene and the scripture passed about the chosen? This person was referring to a book, The God Gene: How Faith is Hardwired into Our Genes, referenced in the sermon and a Time magazine article that Alan used, "Religion: is God in our Genes". The Bible reference could be from several different passages about being chosen. Here is one from Romans 8:29-30

2. Science and faith is not an either/or thing. Really, it is a both/and.

3. This sermon helps a person to realize that they have not used all of the gifts they've been given. This gives them a new appreciation of the gifts, if they are genetic, and a new desire to use them.

4. People who have autism may have been gifted in some other ways.

What are your thoughts?
